KWSG earmarks N1bn for Ilorin water reticulation phase II - Ahmad
Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Dr Ali Ahmad has disclosed that the state government has earmarked about N1billion for the completion of Ilorin phase II water reticulation project in the 2016 budget to address recurring scarcity of pipe borne water.
He said that it is the believe of the House that once the on-going reticulation is completed, the usual suffering for pipe borne water would soon be a thing of the past in the state capital.
Ahmad in a statement issued by his Media Aide, Shuaib Abdulkadir on Tuesday made the disclosure during a condolence visit to the Special Assistant on Electoral Matters to the governor over the death of her mother, Alhaja Afusat Ajoke Jamangada last Saturday.
The speaker also pledged that the Assembly would ensure judicious spending of every money allocated for execution of projects in the 2016 budget through constant oversight function.
Ahmad then challenged leadership of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) and other developmental associations to fashion out means of addressing the problem of open defecation in ancient part of the state capital.
Such avenue the speaker said would enable the community to come up with a model toilet facility that every household would adopt to assist government in enforcing sanitation law.
Ahmad explained that instituting a bill to enable government arrest erring offenders might not solve the problem, saying that community-oriented solution to the menace would assist government in tackling the issue headlong.
He said: "Government can't build toilet for every household. Therefore, all of us must sit down to deal with the issue of open defecation in Ilorin which has become a menace.
"Communities must come together and every stakeholders must find a way to sit with government to fashion out ways to solve this issue. Such step will enable them come up with a model toilet facility that could be adopted for every household".
"With that in place, it will enable government to prosecute any erring household. To come up with a bill to compel every household to have toilet facility might not solve the issue, it is the community that could assist in this regard".
