The Kwara State House of Assembly has granted approval for the State Government to access the N1billion CBN Commercial Agriculture Credit Scheme facility from the Union Bank PLC.
The House gave the nod in its Wednesday's sitting, while considering the request of the Governor on the loan.
Reading the Resolutions of the House, the Speaker Dr. Ali Ahmad said the approval was granted to enhance food production in the State.
The House equally urged the state government to carry all stakeholders along in the disbursement of the loan to ensure that only genuine farmers access the loan, to achieve the intended purpose.
The Speaker who noted with displeasure that genuine farmers had been deprived of the loan in the past, said that the House would carry out its oversight function to ensure transparency and accountability of the Credit Scheme.
The Leader of the House Hon. Hassan Oyeleke while leading the debate said the House had been adequately briefed on the grey areas raised by the State Commissioner for Finance Alhaji Demola Banu and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture and Rural Water Support Service Chief Anu Ibiwoye.
He said the House raised the issues to ensure that the purpose of accessing the loan facility was achieved.
Members representing Kaiama /Kemanji/ Wajibe and Edu Constituencies Hons. Ahmed Ibn Mohammed and Aliyu Ishiaku Adams while praising the state government for the initiative, urged the State government to put robust recovery mechanism in place and ensure that only genuine farmers access the loan to achieve the intended purpose.
