State Legislature Autonomy Will Engender Good Governance - Ahmad

The Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Dr Ali Ahmad has described the legislative arm of government as an effective tool of fighting corruption in the country.

The Speaker made the observation in Ilorin during the signing of Kwara State Legislative Funds Management Bill into law by the State Governor, Alhaji Abdul Fatah Ahmed, at the Government House on Monday.

Dr Ahmad explained that under any democratic government the effective means to engender good governance is to empower the Parliament to effectively perform its statutory functions of serving as check for the other arms of government .

He praised Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed for ensuring that he was the first governor to assent to the bill granting financial autonomy to state legislatures in the country.

Dr Ahmad, who was visibly elated,explained that the eighth legislature under his watch had served as a check for the executive through consistent oversight provide platform for good governance and responsive to the yearnings of the people of the state.

He enjoined the people of the state to jealously guide the achievements of the outgoing government in the state by ensuring continuity of good governance to further make democratic governance more meaningful .

The Governor, while assenting the Bill into law, insisted that the nation's democratic governance must respond to the global trend of ensuring, financial autonomy to the legislative arm of government, to enable it performs its statutory responsibility of providing check and balance for the executive.

Governor Ahmed further observed that state legislature could only platform its functions when it doesn't have to depend on the executive for its funding.

He described the eighth legislature, under the Speaker, as the most vibrant, which according to him, had served as effective check for his government and charged in coming legislature to sustain the tempo to further engender good governance in the state.

The signing of the bill into law was witnessed by members of the state Assembly, members of the state Executive Council and the Clerk of the House of Assembly, Hajia Halimat Jummai Kperogi.
